Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a screw-like post made of titanium or another durable material. They replace your natural tooth roots and provide a supportive foundation for dental restorations like crowns, a bridge, or fixed dentures.

Dental implants are almost as strong as your permanent teeth. If you brush and floss regularly and visit the team at Gables Family Dental twice a year, they can last a lifetime.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants provide a variety of benefits, including:

  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Improved speech
  • Confidence
  • Durability
  • More defined facial features

Dental implants can also improve your oral health. By replacing missing permanent teeth with implants, you can prevent your remaining healthy teeth from moving out of the proper position.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At Gables Family Dental, getting implants requires a series of three appointments.

First dental implants visit

Before placing dental implants, your Gables Family Dental provider conducts an oral exam and assesses the health of your gums and jaw. If you have enough bone to support the implants and healthy gum tissue, your provider administers a local anesthetic and inserts a number of titanium posts into your jaw.

Following placement, your provider writes a prescription for pain medication and provides at-home care instructions.

Second dental implants visit

When the implants finish integrating with your jaw, you return to Gables Family Dental. Your provider takes digital scans of your mouth and sends them to a dental facility. Technicians at the facility use your scans to design and create a custom dental restoration that fits your implants perfectly.

Third dental implants visit

When your new restorations are finished, you visit Gables Family Dental for the last time. Your provider attaches the restorations to your dental implants, polishes your teeth, and provides you with at-home care instructions.

How do I care for dental implants?

Caring for dental implants is very similar to caring for your permanent teeth. The team at Gables Family Dental recommends:

  • Brushing two times a day
  • Flossing before going to bed
  • Avoiding bad habits like chewing on pen caps or ice cubes
  • Protecting your implants with a mouthguard if you play contact sports

In addition, make sure to visit Gables Family Dental at least two times each year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
